Alabama

The state of Alabama has 22 State Parks.

Alaska

The state of Alaska has 8 State Park Units. Included in those park units is a vast number of state parks and other state-operated natural resources. Alaska is also the state with the most publicly owned land, which isn’t surprising since Alaska is the biggest U.S. state by far. It is actually 2 times as big as the second-largest state of Texas. It is also one with the wildest and most natural features. You can fit the smallest U.S. state of Rhode Island into Alaska 425 times.

Arizona

The state of Arizona has 35 State Parks.

Arkansas

The state of Arkansas has 52 state parks. There are no entry fees into Arkansas State Parks according to their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

Many states have state-operated sites, but a designation as a “state park” is what deemed California to have the most. California needs to have all of these state parks since they carry the title of having the highest population of any other U.S. state.

Nevada

The state of Nevada has 28 State Parks. Nevada is the U.S. state with the second most publicly owned land (Alaska has them beat by a long shot). The amount of publicly owned land in Nevada is quite astonishing because it is a supermajority of the land. In fact, 79.6% of the land in Nevada is held by the federal government according to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS). This leaves very little land for the state government to operate state parks, but they still managed to get 28 of them, so congratulations Nevada.

For such a small state coming in at only 1,045 square miles, I was very surprised that it has more state parks than the large U.S. Nebraska which has 76,874 square miles of land. This small state also has just as many state parks as Wyoming, the 10th largest, yet the least populated U.S. state.

South Carolina

The state of South Carolina has 47 State Parks.

South Dakota

The state of South Dakota has 63 State Parks.

Tennessee

The state of Tennessee has 56 State Parks.

Texas

The state of Texas has 99 State Parks. Being the second-largest state, It is surprising that Texas had only a modest number of state parks in its state park system. What makes it even more surprising is that Texas maintains the record as the second most populated U.S. state.

The state of Vermont has 55 State Parks.
